Obesity is on the rise, childhood obesity is on the rise. This means that years to come we will have both children and adults becoming obese, it is disaster in the making. We must fight child hood obesity if we want to give our children a bright and a healthy future. Let us not have children inheriting type two diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea from us by the meals we feed them and the lifestyle we expose them to.

There are many way we can prevent child hood obesity. I would like to mention six practical ones that can be done by any parent, grand parent or care takers.

Get rid of all junk from your shopping list, your house and your car, even in your bags. All junk food is made to look so appetizing to the palate and when we see it, we want it. However if the food is not there, then we will have to do with what is available. Fill your pantry with colorful fruits and vegetables. Display the fruits at a child’s reach all washed and ready to eat. Clean all vegetables that can be used as a snack, cut them into small pieces and keep them in the fridge where a child can easily reach.

Feed your child six small meals all through the day. Have a healthy breakfast option first thing in the morning, a smoothie is always a great place to start. Do not force the child to eat, just make the food available when the child is hungry. If you force your child to eat then they will always eat everything on their platter even if it is not healthy. You want to avoid that.

Serve small portions of food. Do not have a large plate full of food for the child, small size is healthy and encourages self control.

Cook food at home. When you eat outside, often you will be tempted to buy soda and fried foods. If you cook from home, you will use what you have, and making french fries at home is hard. Home cooked food is fresh, tastes better and it encourages familiarity in the home.

Let the children help you prepare the meals. It works like magic, if the children help in meal preparation they own the meal, they feel like they did it and they will always eat it. They can cut the vegetables, add spices, taste the salads for seasoning, they can add fruits in the blender for the smoothies and they can run the blender. Safety is paramount but with your watch, they can help a lot and stay healthy.

Finally let the children play. Creativity in playing will make the children do more and get more from their playing. You do not have to tell them what to do, the children can always come up with what something to get them moving. When I say play, I do not mean video games, computer games or TV games. I mean, them getting outside or in their room and finding out ways to play, to run, to compete, even to fight. It is healthy for them. Buying children all the toys is killing their creativity and making them obese.

There is so much we can do keep our children healthy and to fight childhood obesity. depending on your circumstances you know what recipes you use and how to modify them to fit in your family, do it. Then encourage the children to gout and play till they drop, it is healthy for them.

Dr. Elsie Taveras, an assistant professor of population medicine at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, and an assistant professor of pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Boston, studied 1,343 white, 355 black and 128 Hispanic mother-child pairs through pregnancy and until the children were four years of age. They concluded that black and Hispanic children were at higher risk to be obese.

The following were conditions that predisposed the children to obesity even some before they are born.

  • Having a mother with depression.
  • Beginning solid foods before four months
  • Insufficient sleep.
  • TV in the bedroom
  • Higher intake of fast food when children turn two.

The following are ways to prevent and reduce childhood obesity.

  • Breastfeeding for a very long time.
  • Healthy eating and sleeping habits
  • No TV in the bedroom, reduce TV time at all costs.

Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby: The Risks of Excess Weight

Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby: The Risks of Excess Weight

Reblog this post [with Zemanta]

The number of children classified as overweight or obese has risen in recent years. Being overweight in childhood often leads to being overweight as an adult, increasing the risk of health problems such as heart disease and cancer. The difficulty is in knowing what to do about the problem.

One area that’s being studied is whether children get less exercise than they used to, and if so, whether increasing the amount of physical education they have at school can improve the situation.

This latest study compared children who had the standard, legally required three PE lessons of 45 minutes each week, with children who had five lessons a week plus extra short bursts of activity during the day and at home. The study was done in Switzerland, with classes of children being randomly assigned to one or other group.

It is no secret that obesity is a huge problem in America and that includes children as well as adults. One of the biggest defenses against this killer is knowledge. The experts say that an obese person will live 20 years less than a person that has a healthy weight. So, knowing the most common causes of obesity is going to help you eliminate it in children.

Genetics does play a part in being overweight. It is not uncommon to see obese adults with overweight children, but the reason for this can also be that both parties are living the same lifestyle. Overweight children should be checked by a physician to ensure that there is not a medical reason that they are overweight and then they can begin to make healthy changes in their lifestyle.

Environment is partially to blame for children being overweight. Most schools do not serve the most nutritious meals and many of them have cut back on physical education requirements. Although this is beginning to change, the process is slow. Packing your child a nutritious lunch at least 3 days a week will go a long way in eliminating the foods that lead to obesity. You can also have a big impact the amount of exercise that child.

Diet is a big factor in being overweight. We eat fast food much more than we used to and it is no secret that many of these foods are loaded with fat and calories. Fast food may be convenient, but unless you make healthy choices you are setting yourself up to gain weight if you eat at a fast food restaurant very often. There are now many convenience foods available that are healthy and they cost no more than a fast food meal.

Lack of physical activity is a huge contributing factor to our children being overweight. In recent years, children have spent more time in front of the screen (TV, computer, video games). They do not spend the time playing outside, riding bikes or any number of other physical activities that used to be enjoyed by children. The best way to fight this is to plan fun activities that you can enjoy with your kids.

In 95% of all childhood obesity cases, changing the way we live will change the weight and the health of our children. Small changes can go a long way in improving the health of a child. If you have an overweight child or relative, make it a priority to make the necessary changes to help them live a healthier life.
