Wenesday Feb 17-If you have weight loss surgery and do a second one, you are at a higher risk of complications such as protein malnutrition. A new reseacrh has found out that repeated bariatic surgery the only effective way for long term weight loss in obese people when done more than once in a patient it carries with it a higher risk of complications.

In their report, Greek researchers looked at 56 patients who had repeat bariatric surgery between 1995 and 2008. The patients had an average age of 39.6, and an average body mass index (BMI) of 46.9. (BMI is a measurement that takes into account weight and height, and those with a BMI over 30 are considered obese.)

The three main reasons for the “revisional” bariatric surgery were: unsatisfactory weight loss after the initial procedure; severe nutritional complications such as protein malnutrition; and intolerable side effects such as blocking or narrowing of the digestive tract. A study by Bloomberg reported on Feb 10 2010 has indicated that weight loss surgery is now more effective in providing a weight loss alternative to severely obese teens. The surgery involved being fitted with Allegan lab band device.

After two years the results indicated that the group who underwent the weight loss surgery lost more weight than the ones who followed a change in lifestyle.
