The spring is here and we are all preparing to go out and run, in our running shoes and lose some weight in the process. Well a study is now showing that running shoes can put more strain in your joints. they are even worse than running in high heeled shoes. Get that! Running shoes in the market are considered that bad. The running shoes, in your house or in the market can cause osteoarthritis, this is the breakdown of cartilage in your joints that lead to bone rubbing against bone and leading to intense pain.

This research was carried out by Dr Kerrigan while in Virgnia university. This is a quote from fox news regarding the research in an article titled Running shoes could cause joint pain. The study enrolled 37 women and 31 men who ran recreationally, at least 15 miles (24 km) per week. The subjects were then studied in a “gait laboratory,” running either barefoot or with a typical running shoe. The subjects had markers on their knees, hips and ankle joints, and as they ran, cameras picked up these markers, allowing the researchers to see how the joints moved.

The researchers found an increase in this torque for the knees, hips and ankles when the participants were wearing running shoes as compared with when they were running barefoot.

The problem with the running shoes is the inner sole that they have. It seems the inner sole behaves the same way like having a high heeled shoe. Now there is a book called Born to run by Christopher McDougall, that suggests that we run barefoot. That is something. But with the concrete and all the artificial stuff around, the impact on the legs is very high and can cause more injury, You can also easily fall or break a nail. The running shoes do provide protection so this is something good. We may just have to use our running shoes for now, to lose weigh and stay healthy, till we get better alternatives.
All the best,
Sandema
