In his new book change your brain, change your body that was released Feb 16 2010 Daniel G. Amen writes about taking care of your brain to get a better body and in the process lose some weight. Mental health problems can sometimes lead to weight gain, this is why I always say that to start the weight loss process it is important that you deal with your brain first, acceptance is the key. In addition to the book change your brain, change your body, Amen has also developed a 10 wee weight loss program that is based on the principles outlined in the book.

In Dr. Amens blog he states the following; One man lost 39 pounds by the end of the program! Another lost 35. Among regular attendees, the average weight loss was 9.9 pounds. Oh, and did I mention that we did this study group over the holidays when most people tend to gain weight? Our group actually lost weight during the week of Christmas!

This is how powerful the book change your brain change your body is when it combined with the program. This 10 week program will be availbale on their website for free sometime soon, you can keep on checking at lose weight the Brain Healthy Way – Amen Clinics

I believe this is a great program and a great weight loss book too. The book change your brain, change your body is now available in Amazon from Feb 16 2010 for 17.15USD.

The 150 healthiest foods on earth by Johhny Bowden is one of the food reference books in my house. It is a great book that cuts through the BS and tell you that vegetables are the best things that happened to mankind. He talks about beef and poultry too but the emphasis is on vegetables and some super fruits like blue berries.

While it is true that no one can grow fat on eating corn alone. The truth of the matter is, good healthy food will prevent you from adding more pounds on your body and it will prevent you from getting sick. You will also reduce stress and can use some food like coconut oil to cure diseases in the body.

The book has all the sections on food, from water, fruits, vegetables, grains, spices and oils. Some of the powerful foods that I found out in this book include.
Coconut oil.
Apple cider vinegar.
Blue berries.
Flax seed oil
Mangoes.
Papaya.
Kale.
And much much more.

This book, the 150 healthiest food on earth by Johhny Bowen is the go to place to find out the best foods to eat. In addition you will also find out which foods are safe and the one s that you need to stick with the organic kind.

I also got the idea about oat meal and that you can eat it raw. I loved the idea and since then I have been using oatmeal in my weight loss smoothie. Much easier and much healthy.

If you want to get this book then you can easily find it in amazon for about 16.49USD. You cannot go wrong with this book .

The only shortfall is that this is a book that you cannot read in a day, you have to take time to read the book and even keep it as a reference. There is also a section on different health experts revealing what they eat. You know, I have been feeling guilty eating avocado, I just realized it is one of the super foods. I used avocado to reduce cravings by eating it before a meal and it odes help me lose weight.

One of the customer reviews in amazon that nails the point home is this one. This book could not be any better. There are a million books out there that tell you what foods are healthy and, anyone that has paid any attention at all, can tell you what is healthy and what is not. But this book goes farther by giving you all the research and little known facts about so many different foods. And it presents both sides of controversial topics, such as soy. I now have a resource to see how I can correct problems through nutrition. This is highly recommended for anyone that has an interest in improving their health through nutrition. Thank you!!!

This makes my first nutrition book review in this blog. The book What to eat by Marion Nestle is getting raving reviews in Amazon. Maybe because she is saying the truth without political coatings or she is a nutrition professor and people trust experts.

From the reviews I have read, the book  has some very powerful but practical guides to everyday eating that can save you from adding tons of useless fat and sugar in your system and to help you make healthy choices for your future and your children s future. There is even a section on environmental degradation as related to food production.

In the amazon review it is stated that and I quote  “Nestle walks readers through every supermarket section–produce, meat, fish, dairy, packaged foods, bottled waters, and more–decoding labels and clarifying nutritional and other claims (in supermarket-speak, for example, “fresh” means most likely to spoil first, not recently picked or prepared), and in so doing explores issues like the effects of food production on our environment, the way pricing works, and additives and their effect on nutrition”.

For the most part there is always the confusion of the terms natural and organic and companies that sell packed food use the term natural to lure unsuspecting customers to buy their products. It is therefore wise to have a book that will walk one through the labels and make one a very informed customer.

Going through the customer reviews in Amazon, I was tempted to rush and buy this book. Here are some of the reviews that caught my attention.

On customer commented on her section on meats by saying this,” she notes well, those who cull (kill, slaughter) the meat Americans eat work for low wages in very dangerous conditions, with the buyer all to willing to ignore just what happens to get that piece of meat on ones dinner table or fast food meal”.

This comment is based on  Page 139 of the book in which she says that raising cattle consumes vast amounts of nonrenewable energy.

Marion  states that according to figures in the June 2004 National Geographic, it takes more than 200 gallons of fuel oil to raise a 1,200 pound steer on a feedlot. It is like we buy meat and the money goes to environmental destruction and well you thought this country was a ‘developed’ country’ that should have some developed ways to take care of the environment.

Another customer review that I loved was this one “What to Eat serves up 600 pages of indispensable advice, but the author is also willing to sum it up quickly: “Eat less, move more, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, go easy on junk foods.”

We all know this too well, it is a cliche, but maybe when it comes from the wise words of a professor there is value in it.

The best part in the book for me, is the section that looks at the different labels and ingredients. Knowledge is power. As a parent being informed means, less poison in my system and in my children too.  I will feed myself and my children right and not live in ignorant of the dangers of what I choose to consume.

However this book though popular and well praised by many there were some negative reviews that I noted such as this one “Her section on seafood is just plain scary. Pollution coupled with aquafarming make seafood — especially those on the higher echelon of the food chain — unsafe and dangerous to eat”. One reviewer commented.

And this is always my problem with some nutrition and fitness books, they tend to instill fear and can lead to some parents doing very crazy things to try and protect their children.  It is important as a customer to always find out what will work best for you and not to become a food extremist, if such a thing exists.

In conclusion I think What to Eat by Marion Nestles is  book to consider, mainly for the part that she exposes facts on environmental degradation related to food production and the part on scrutinizing labels in the supermarket. From the reviews it is an easy read aimed at everyday people who walk the aisles to buy food.

She also has a section on the dangers of formula milk and therefore coupled with the above powerful parts, I give it a five star and I a hope to grab it sometime soon.

The books sells in amazon for eighteen bucks, not so expensive considering we spend more than that on pizza and soda alone in one meal!
